USAF SUPERSONIC VTOL BOMBER 1968 by CUTANGUS USAF SUPERSONIC VTOL BOMBER 1968 by CUTANGUS
This picture represents a supersonic C.T.O.V.L. bomber dressed as a U.S.A.F. aircraft of the 60's.
Vertical landing can be achieved by the four fans buried in the big wings, moved by the gas generated by the central turbofan engine.
Around the main engine are a cluster or rocket engines to be used only during enemy airspace penetration, in order to raise speed up to Mach 3.3 and so present a difficult target to air defenses.
This is a design I made in 2010 to a movie project that was finally shelved. It was never released and has never shown before.

For a really freaky weapon that almost got built, feed "SLAM missile" to Wikipedia.  This was a real project in the late fifties, a ramjet-powered supersonic lifting body that would have delivered sixteen one-megaton bombs along a programmed route, flying low enough to evade the radars of the time and fast enough to defeat interception.  The really freaky part was the engine, a high-temperature unshielded nuclear reactor that also served as a secondary weapon.  The neutron flux and radioactive exhaust would have been deadly to anything under the flight path, and after dropping its last bomb the missile would dive on its final target with its load of -literally- white-hot fuel and fission products.  The reactor was actually built and ground tested, but by that time ICBMs, improved radar and surface-to-air missiles had rendered the idea obsolete.  SLAM would have used terrain-contour-matching radar, which was the ancestor of current cruise missile guidance systems.  No mention of how hey planned to launch this beast, but with a range of over 100,000 miles (NOT a typo!) the base could have been on some remote island, operated by remote control from a submarine that the launch crew would use to escape.  This makes the most extreme Nazi experimental weapons look timid.

interesting concept, harrier meets Saunders Roe 111, with a bit of cutlass. Hate to think about fuel consumption though. Makes for a very striking looking aircraft.
